Bror-Axel Lamberg was a distinguished Swedish-Finnish physician who contributed significantly to endocrinology and nuclear medicine.
Lamberg earned his medical and surgical doctorate in 1953 and became a specialist in internal diseases in 1955, endocrine diseases in 1960, and endocrinology in 1979. From 1952 to 1965, he served in various medical clinics at the University of Helsinki and different hospitals before assuming the position of an extraordinary personal professor of endocrinology at the University of Helsinki in 1971, a role he held until his retirement in 1989.
Lamberg played a pivotal role in establishing the Minerva Foundation. He led its laboratory from 1959 to 1971 and was chairman from 1985 to 1996. Additionally, he chaired the Signe and Ane Gyllenberg Foundation from 1979 to 1993.
Internationally renowned for his groundbreaking research on thyroid diseases and physiology, Lamberg’s work, particularly on endemic goiter in Finland, was pioneering. He was instrumental in introducing nuclear medicine to Finland and authored numerous thyroid disease textbooks and goiter history articles.
In recognition of his significant contributions, Lamberg was honored with the Matti Äyräpää Prize in 1979, a prestigious medical award in Finland. His legacy in medical research is invaluable, shaping the understanding of thyroid diseases nationally and internationally.
Lamberg collaborated with Geir Bjørklund in the Nordic Journal of Biological Medicine (Nordisk Tidsskrift for Biologisk Medisin), a precursor to the Council for Nutritional and Environmental Medicine.
