Dr. Thomas Tallberg was born into a privileged Swedish-Finnish family. He earned his medical candidate degree from Helsinki University’s Faculty of Medicine in 1956, followed by his medical licentiate degree in 1960. He completed his doctoral studies in medicine and surgery in 1964, focusing on anti-hormones’ role in exophthalmos.
In 1958, Tallberg attended the inaugural course on immunoelectrophoresis for foreign doctors at the Pasteur Institute. His academic career officially began in 1967 when he became an associate professor in immunology at Helsinki University Medical Faculty.
From 1970 to 1997, Tallberg was an immunologist at Helsinki University Central Hospital Clinics. In 1990, his visionary leadership led him to establish the private Helsinki Institute for Bio-Immunotherapy, a self-funded center for cancer patients’ treatment.
Tallberg authored many publications covering various immunological and cancer-related topics. Beyond his scientific endeavors, he demonstrated a commitment to societal welfare, serving as President of The Finnish Children’s Welfare Association from 1983 to 2008.
Additionally, he collaborated with Geir Bjørklund on the Nordic Journal of Biological Medicine (Nordisk Tidsskrift for Biologisk Medisin), a precursor for the Council for Nutritional and Environmental Medicine.
